How Do I Read a Call Number?
The Library uses the Library of Congress classification system. If you're not familiar with LC call numbers, they can seem a little confusing, but don't worry: here's a quick explanation of how they work.
If you want to learn about which subjects are associated with which Library of Congress call numbers, see the Library of Congress Classification Outline

Books are arranged first alphabetically, using the letters at the start of the call number: | LC487 .C43 1994 |
Then numerically, by the numbers that come directly after the letter. These are read as whole numbers: in other words, 400 comes later than 43. | LC487 .C43 1994 |
Then alphabetically again, by the letter that comes after the decimal point: | LC487 .C43 1994 |
Then numerically again, by the number that comes directly after that letter. These are read as decimal numbers: in other words: 55 comes later than 541. | LC487 .C43 1994 |
There may be another letter-number combination after the one with the decimal point in front of it. If so, you read it the same way: first alphabetically by letter, and then numerically in decimal order. | BX1795 .I57 E83 2000 |
The four-digit number at the end of the call number is the publication date of the item. | LC487 .C43 1994 |

- To access your account features, click "My Account Links to an external site." on the upper right corner of the Discovery search page. (It should appear under "Hello [YourName]")

One of the exciting features of our new library system is the ability to place holds on circulating materials. You may have requested holds at other libraries before, but read on for more information about how this service works here at Kistler Library and Learning Commons.
First, what are holds? Holds are user requests for circulating materials in the Library, ensuring you get access to the materials you need when you need them. When you place a hold on an item, your request gets sent to Library staff who then retrieve the item from the collection and place it on "hold" for you to check out at the Information Desk. Essentially, by placing a hold on a book, you're calling "dibs" and making sure it will be ready to check out.
How do I place a hold?
- Visit our Discovery catalog: https://rosemontcollege.on.worldcat.org/ Links to an external site.
- Search for items in our catalog. (Note: You can only place holds on physical items that are allowed to be checked out. So, you can't place a hold on an ebook or book from the Rare collection, for instance.)
- Click on the title of the item you'd like to request to bring up the item's page.
- On the right side of the page, you will see a box titled, "Access Options." This box will tell you if the item is available, and if so, where in the Library it is located. If you are able to place a hold on the item, you will see a red "Place Hold" button in this box.
- Click the "Place Hold" button.
- If you are not already logged in to your Library account, you will be prompted to login. [Click here Links to an external site. for instructions on accessing your Library account.]
- Fill out the hold request form on the following page.
- Choose an option from the drop down menu under "I need...." If you are requesting an item or items from a multivolume set, choose "Specific Copies or Volumes" and use the text box below to specify which volume(s) you would like to check out. Choose "Special Request," if you have any further specific instructions for Library staff.
- If you need the item for a specific period of time, select "I need this for specific dates" and fill in the appropriate information.
- Click submit, and your request will be sent to Library staff.
- You will receive a notification via email when your hold is ready for pickup. You can always check the status of your holds or cancel/edit a hold request on the "Requests Links to an external site." tab under "My Account" on Discovery.
Ready to pickup your hold? Stop by the Library's Information Desk during our regular hours and let our staff know you're here for a hold pickup. Present your ID, and we will check your materials out to you. Simple as that! (Don't wait too long to pickup your hold, though. Items not picked up after 7 days will be reshelved so other patrons can use them.)
Did you know that Rosemont College is connected to thousands of libraries worldwide through a service called Interlibrary Loan? Using Interlibrary Loan (ILL), you can access materials far beyond what Kistler Library has in its own collections. And the best part? This service is entirely free for our patrons.
In the past, we only accepted ILL requests through a form on our website, but now with our new Discovery search, you can place ILL requests directly through our catalog.
How does ILL work?
- Visit our Discovery catalog: https://rosemontcollege.on.worldcat.org/ Links to an external site.
- Search for the materials you want to access. By default, the system searches only what we have available at Kistler Library. However, using the menu on the left side of the page, we can expand our search results to browse "Libraries Worldwide." This is especially helpful if you can't find what you need at Rosemont.
- Under "Held By Library," change the selection from "Rosemont College" to one of the other options: SEPCHE, TCLC, or Libraries Worldwide. (Note: SEPCHE and TCLC are local library consortia to which Rosemont belongs. If you request a book available at a SEPCHE or TCLC Library, chances are it will get to you much faster than from somewhere else!)
- As you search under these expanded options, you may still see titles that say "Available, Rosemont College." But any title that isn't available at Rosemont, you can request via ILL!
- Click on the title of an item you want to request. When the item's page loads, you'll see a box on the right side of the page titled, "Access Options." If this item is available via ILL, you'll see a red button here reading, "Request Interlibrary Loan."
- Click "Request Interlibrary Loan" and fill out the proceeding form.
- If you can't find the item you'd like to request in our Discovery Catalog, you can always fill out the following online form: Interlibrary Loan Request Form Links to an external site.
- Once you've finished filling out the request form, click submit, and the request will be sent to Library staff.
- You will receive an email notification when your item is ready for pickup. Staff may reach out if additional information is needed or there are any issues fulfilling your request
- When your item is ready, stop by the Library's Information Desk during regular hours to check it out. The item's due date will be listed on the cover sheet affixed to the item. These due dates are set by the lending institution, not Kistler Library.
Also note: certain items, such as ebooks and ejournals, don't usually lend via ILL. When requesting articles, our partner institutions may send PDFs or printed copies. If you receive a copy of an article, it is yours to keep. Books and DVDs should be returned to Kistler Library by the due date listed. Contact library@rosemont.edu for renewals.
With a service like Interlibrary Loan, the vast array of human knowledge is available at your fingertips! Take advantage of ILL to request course materials, popular reading, or anything that Kistler Library doesn't have access to. And remember, there are no fees and no limits on your ILL requests.
